Wood-effect tiles: the best of both worlds

Wood-effect porcelain tiles give you the look and feel of real timber with none of the drawbacks. They will not warp in humid bathrooms, scratch in busy hallways, or need oiling every year.

Modern inkjet printing technology means today's wood-effect tiles are remarkably realistic. The best ranges reproduce the grain, knots, and colour variation of real timber species — from pale Scandinavian pine to rich American walnut. Some even have textured surfaces that mimic the feel of sawn or brushed wood.

The plank format is the most popular, typically 200x1200mm or 200x1000mm, and they are laid in a staggered bond just like real floorboards. For a more contemporary look, wider planks at 300x1200mm create a streamlined effect.

Wood-effect tiles are particularly popular in open-plan living spaces where the floor runs from the kitchen through to the living area. Unlike real wood, they are completely waterproof and can be used with underfloor heating without any concerns about expansion or warping.

Grout lines are inevitable, but choosing a colour-matched grout minimises their visibility. A rectified (precision-cut) tile with a 2mm grout joint gives the closest approximation to real timber flooring.
