How to choose the right kitchen tiles
From splashbacks to floors, picking kitchen tiles involves balancing style, durability, and practicality. Our guide covers everything you need to know.
The kitchen is the heart of the home, and the right tiles can make all the difference. Whether you are tiling a splashback, a full wall, or a kitchen floor, there are a few key things to consider before you buy.
For splashbacks, glazed ceramic and glass tiles are popular choices. They are easy to clean, available in a huge range of colours and patterns, and can add a real design statement behind the hob or worktop. If you prefer a seamless look, consider large-format porcelain — fewer grout lines mean less cleaning.
Kitchen floors need to be hardwearing. Porcelain is the go-to material: it is dense, scratch-resistant, and practically maintenance-free. Matt or textured finishes offer better grip, especially in a room where spills are inevitable. Natural stone is another beautiful option, though it typically requires sealing.
Think about how the floor tiles will work with the rest of your kitchen. If you have a busy worktop and colourful cabinetry, a neutral floor in grey, beige, or warm white creates balance. If the kitchen is more minimal, the floor is your chance to introduce pattern or texture — wood-effect planks and patterned encaustic-look tiles are both excellent choices.
Grout colour matters more than people think. A matching grout gives a seamless appearance; a contrasting grout highlights each tile and adds a graphic quality. We always recommend ordering a grout sample alongside your tile samples.
Finally, order samples. Tiles look different under your own kitchen lighting, next to your cabinets and worktops. We offer free samples delivered to your door — order a few options and live with them for a couple of days before committing.
